Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single highest-impact free tool available to any Pakistani business with a physical location or local service area. It's what puts your business on Google Maps. It's what produces the business card-style panel that appears on the right side of Google search results when someone searches your company name. And it's what determines whether you appear in the map pack — the three business listings shown above organic results for searches like "software company Lahore" or "digital marketing agency Islamabad".
Setting it up takes 20–30 minutes. Most Pakistani businesses haven't done it. This guide walks you through the process step by step.
Before the setup steps, it's worth understanding what you're actually getting:
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account (ideally your business Gmail, not a personal account).
Click "Add your business to Google". Enter your exact business name as it appears on your signboard and official documents. Consistency matters — the name on your GBP should match your website, business cards, and FBR registration exactly.
If your business already appears (someone may have created an unverified listing previously), click "Claim this business" instead of creating a new one.
This is one of the most important decisions in the setup. Your primary category determines which searches you appear in. Choose the most specific category that describes your core service:
You can add secondary categories later. Start with the most accurate primary category.
If you have a physical office or shop that customers can visit, enter your full address. Use your exact street address — not a vague description. For businesses in Lahore, include the area name (Gulberg, DHA, Johar Town) as Google uses this for local relevance.
If you serve customers at their location (consultants, IT support, delivery services), you can set a service area instead of or in addition to a physical address. Add the cities or regions you serve.
Add your primary phone number with the correct country code format (+92-300-XXXXXXX). Add your website URL. These must be consistent with what's on your website — Google cross-checks them.
Google requires verification to confirm you actually operate at the listed address. Verification options available in Pakistan:
Video call is currently the fastest and most reliable verification method in Pakistan. Have your business signage visible and a utility bill or lease document ready.
A verified but incomplete profile ranks poorly. After verification, complete every section:
Write a clear description of what you do, who you serve, and where you're based. Include your primary keyword naturally. Example for a software company:
"Softvirtue Technologies builds custom software and digital marketing solutions for Pakistani retail, wholesale, and distribution businesses. Based in Lahore, we develop inventory management systems, web applications, POS systems, and run Google Ads and SEO campaigns. 50+ projects delivered since 2019. Free consultation available."
Set accurate hours including whether you're open on Fridays and Saturdays. Update hours for Eid and other Pakistani holidays when applicable — incorrect hours during major holidays are a common complaint that damages reviews.
Add at minimum:
Listings with 10+ photos receive significantly more views and direction requests than listings with 1–2 photos. You don't need professional photography — clear, well-lit phone photos work well.
Add each of your services individually with a name and description. This helps Google match your listing to more specific searches.
Google offers various attributes depending on your business type. Relevant ones for Pakistani businesses: "Online appointments", "Free consultation", "Serves Lahore / Karachi / Islamabad".
Reviews are the fastest lever to improve your local ranking after setup. The approach that works in Pakistan:
Five genuine reviews with real names will often produce a noticeable local ranking improvement within 2–4 weeks. Fake reviews are against Google's policy and can result in your listing being suspended — not worth the risk.
Google Business Profile has a "Posts" feature that lets you publish updates, offers, or articles directly to your listing. Businesses that post regularly signal active management to Google — a ranking factor.
Post cadence: once per week or once per fortnight is sufficient. Post types that work well:
For your GBP to work together with your website SEO:
Map pack visibility improvements typically appear within 4–8 weeks of a complete, verified GBP setup in Pakistan — faster in cities where your category has fewer competitors. Reviews accelerate this significantly. A fully populated listing with 5+ reviews in a mid-competition Pakistani B2B category can reach the local map pack within 60 days.
GBP setup is something every Pakistani business can do independently. If you'd like help with the broader local SEO strategy — on-page optimisation, content, and link building alongside your GBP — see our SEO services page or book a free consultation.
