Shopify vs Custom E-Commerce for Pakistani Businesses — Which Should You Choose?

Abdul Sammad 28 Apr 2026 5 min read

Every Pakistani business looking to sell online faces the same decision: use Shopify (or a similar platform like WooCommerce or Daraz) or build a custom e-commerce website. Both are legitimate choices — for different businesses, at different stages. This guide gives you a clear comparison based on what actually works in the Pakistani market, not generic global advice.

The Real State of E-Commerce in Pakistan

Pakistan's e-commerce sector has grown significantly since 2020. But Pakistani online buyers have specific expectations that differ from UK or US shoppers:

  • Cash on delivery (COD) is still dominant. A large share of Pakistani online purchases are paid on delivery. Any e-commerce platform that doesn't handle COD workflows natively creates friction.
  • Pakistani payment gateways are non-standard. EasyPaisa, JazzCash, HBL PayConnect, Meezan Pay — these require specific integrations that imported platforms often don't support out of the box.
  • WhatsApp is part of the purchase journey. Pakistani buyers frequently message sellers on WhatsApp before or after placing an order. E-commerce that doesn't integrate with WhatsApp misses a key touchpoint.
  • Delivery is fragmented. TCS, Leopards, BlueEx, Trax — each has its own integration requirements. Centralized tracking is often handled manually by Pakistani e-commerce businesses.

The platform you choose needs to handle these realities, not require workarounds for each one.

Shopify in Pakistan: What Works and What Doesn't

Shopify is the world's leading e-commerce platform and a legitimate option for Pakistani businesses — with important caveats.

Where Shopify Works Well for Pakistani Businesses

  • Businesses selling internationally. If you export products — clothing, handicrafts, textiles, IT services — and primarily accept international payment (PayPal, Stripe, credit card), Shopify's international payment support is excellent. The platform was built for this.
  • Fashion and lifestyle brands targeting urban Pakistani buyers with bank cards or digital wallets. With a local payment gateway integration (HBL or Meezan), Shopify can handle a Pakistani fashion brand's online sales adequately.
  • Businesses that need a quick launch. A basic Shopify store can be set up in a few days. If you need to start selling online this week, Shopify's speed to launch is a genuine advantage.

Where Shopify Falls Short for Pakistani Businesses

  • Monthly fees in USD. Shopify's Basic plan is $39/month — currently around PKR 11,000/month. The Shopify plan (needed for better features) is $105/month — PKR 30,000/month. Every year the PKR cost goes up as the USD rate increases. Over 3 years, that's PKR 400,000–1,000,000 in platform fees alone, for software you don't own.
  • COD is not native. Cash on delivery requires a third-party app (additional PKR 2,000–5,000/month) and manual reconciliation between delivery and payment records.
  • EasyPaisa and JazzCash integrations are limited or plugin-dependent. Not all Pakistani payment providers have reliable Shopify plugins, and those that exist add monthly subscription costs.
  • Inventory management is basic. For businesses with complex inventory — multiple variants, multi-warehouse, wholesale pricing alongside retail — Shopify's inventory tools are insufficient without expensive apps.
  • You don't own the platform. If Shopify changes its pricing, policies, or discontinues features you depend on, you have limited options. Your business is built on rented land.

Custom E-Commerce: What You Get and What It Costs

A custom-built e-commerce website is built specifically for your products, your customers, and your Pakistani business requirements.

What Custom E-Commerce Includes

  • Product catalogue designed for your specific categories and variants
  • EasyPaisa, JazzCash, and bank transfer payment integration built in from day one
  • COD order management with delivery tracking
  • WhatsApp order notification to seller and buyer
  • Inventory sync with your physical stock (if combined with an inventory system)
  • Wholesale and retail pricing tiers if needed
  • Custom delivery zone pricing
  • Admin panel for order management, product updates, and reporting

Cost Range for Custom E-Commerce in Pakistan

Scope PKR Range Timeline
Basic e-commerce (catalogue + checkout + COD) 120,000 – 180,000 4 – 6 weeks
Full-featured store (payments + delivery + inventory sync) 180,000 – 280,000 6 – 10 weeks
Marketplace or multi-vendor 350,000 – 600,000+ 10 – 18 weeks

After the one-time build cost, ongoing costs are hosting (PKR 2,000–8,000/month depending on traffic) and an annual maintenance contract if you want priority support and updates.

What About WooCommerce and Daraz?

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is free and runs on WordPress. It's more flexible than Shopify but also more technical to maintain. Pakistani payment integrations exist but vary in reliability. It's a viable option for businesses with a developer on staff or a good local WordPress agency. The ongoing hosting, security, and maintenance costs are lower than Shopify but higher than many businesses anticipate.

Daraz

Daraz is a marketplace, not an e-commerce platform. Selling on Daraz means competing against hundreds of sellers in your category on someone else's platform, paying commission per sale (typically 8–20%), and with no control over customer data or brand presentation. Daraz works well for volume product sellers as a channel — it's not a substitute for your own e-commerce presence. Treat it as one channel among several, not your primary platform.

Our Recommendation

Choose Shopify if:

  • You primarily sell internationally and accept foreign currency payments
  • You need to launch in days, not weeks
  • Your product catalogue is simple (under 50 products, no complex variants)
  • You're testing a new product line and want to validate demand before investing in custom

Choose custom if:

  • You primarily sell to Pakistani customers and need COD + EasyPaisa/JazzCash natively
  • You have complex inventory or wholesale/retail pricing requirements
  • You want to own your platform with no monthly fees after the build
  • You're planning to operate this business long-term (3+ years)
  • You want the store integrated with your inventory or order management system

Most established Pakistani retail and wholesale businesses that sell domestically will find custom e-commerce cheaper in total cost over 3 years and better suited to their actual requirements.

We've built e-commerce websites for Pakistani clothing retailers, distributors, and direct-to-consumer brands — all with EasyPaisa/JazzCash, COD, and WhatsApp notification built in.
