Ranking #1 on Google no longer guarantees a visitor. Google's AI Overviews now answer many searches directly at the top of the results page, and a growing share of buyers research using ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini instead of typing into a search box at all. For Pakistani businesses, this means SEO strategy now has to account for a second, parallel goal: getting cited by AI systems, not just ranked by traditional search. This is often called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
The practical implication: a page can rank well in traditional Google results and still be invisible in AI-generated answers, because AI systems select and extract content differently than the classic ranking algorithm does.
AI Overviews and chatbot answer engines don't rank pages the same way classic Google search does. They look for content that is easy to extract a clear, confident answer from. Specifically:
An emerging convention, llms.txt, is a plain-text file hosted at a website's root that gives AI crawlers a clear, structured summary of what the business does, its key facts (founding date, location, services, pricing), and links to its most important pages. It's not an official Google or OpenAI standard, and its direct effect on citation frequency isn't proven — but it costs little to implement and gives AI systems an unambiguous, low-noise source of truth about your business, which is exactly the kind of clean signal these systems favor.
Your robots.txt file controls which AI crawlers can even read your site in the first place. For a business that wants AI visibility, the crawlers worth explicitly allowing include:
| Crawler | Powers |
|---|---|
| Google-Extended | Google AI Overviews / Gemini training |
| GPTBot / OAI-SearchBot | ChatGPT training and live web search |
| ClaudeBot / anthropic-ai | Claude |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity's live-search answers |
Some businesses choose to block AI crawlers to prevent their content from training third-party models. That's a legitimate choice — but it's a trade-off: blocking these crawlers also makes it far less likely your business appears in AI-generated answers at all, which matters more each year as search behaviour shifts.
Almost everything that helps AI citability also helps traditional SEO: clean schema, fast pages, clear answer-first content, and genuine topical depth. GEO isn't a separate discipline that competes for budget with SEO — it's mostly the same fundamentals, done well, with a few additional considerations layered on top (llms.txt, explicit AI crawler access, answer-first content structure). A site with strong technical and content SEO is already most of the way to being AI-citable.
AI Overviews and AI chat answer engines are unquestionably real and growing — that part isn't hype. What's still evolving is the exact mechanics of how any individual page gets selected for citation, since none of the major AI providers have published a definitive ranking algorithm the way Google eventually did for classic search.
Not yet through Google Search Console directly, though Google has begun surfacing some AI Overview impression data. The most reliable method today is manually testing your target queries in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to see whether and how your business appears.
Most of the work is the same work good SEO already requires — clean schema, fast pages, clear content. The marginal additional effort (an llms.txt file, robots.txt review, answer-first rewrites) is small, and being early is itself an advantage: very few local competitors are addressing this yet.
We've applied everything in this article to our own website — llms.txt, AI crawler access, answer-first content, validated schema — and track the results as part of our own ongoing GEO audits.
