Technical SEO Issues That Are Killing Your Google Rankings

Technical SEO problems are invisible to visitors but directly limit how well a website can rank — no amount of great content fixes a site Google can't crawl properly, or that takes 6 seconds to load. Below are the technical issues we see most often on Pakistani business websites, in order of how much ranking damage they typically cause, and how to fix each one.

1. Slow Page Speed (The Most Common, Most Costly Issue)

Page speed affects rankings directly through Google's Core Web Vitals, and indirectly through bounce rate — visitors leave slow sites before they even see your content. Common causes on Pakistani business sites:

  • Uncompressed HTML/CSS/JS. Enabling Brotli or Gzip compression on a server can cut page weight by 60-80% with zero code changes — often the single highest-impact, lowest-effort fix available.
  • Unoptimized images. A single uncompressed hero image can weigh more than the rest of the page combined. Convert to WebP/AVIF and compress before uploading.
  • Render-blocking external resources. Loading CSS/JS frameworks (Bootstrap, jQuery, icon libraries) from third-party CDNs adds an extra DNS lookup and connection for every visitor. Self-hosting critical CSS, or at minimum using <link rel="preconnect"> to warm up the connection early, reduces this delay.
  • No caching headers. Without Cache-Control headers, browsers re-download unchanged assets on every visit.

How to check: Google PageSpeed Insights and Search Console's Core Web Vitals report both give real, Chrome-user-based field data — not just lab estimates.

2. Crawlability and Indexability Problems

If Google can't crawl a page, it doesn't matter how well-written the content is — it will never rank.

  • robots.txt blocking important pages. A misconfigured Disallow rule can accidentally block your entire site, or key sections of it, from being crawled at all. Always test changes in Search Console's robots.txt tester before publishing.
  • Missing or broken XML sitemap. A sitemap tells Google which URLs exist and when they last changed. An outdated sitemap that still lists deleted pages, or is missing new ones, slows down discovery of fresh content.
  • Accidental noindex tags. These sometimes get left over from a staging/development environment and quietly deindex live pages. Worth auditing periodically, especially after a site migration or redesign.
  • Orphan pages. Pages with no internal links pointing to them are hard for Google to discover and signal low importance even once found.

3. Missing or Incorrect HTTPS / Redirect Chains

  • HTTPS has been a confirmed ranking signal since 2014 — an HTTP site (or one with mixed content warnings) is at a real disadvantage.
  • Multiple redirect hops (http → https → www → non-www, as four separate redirects instead of one) slow down both crawling and the visitor's actual page load. Every hop should collapse to a single, direct 301 redirect to the final canonical URL.
  • Verify both http:// and https://www. versions of your domain correctly and immediately redirect to your one canonical version.

4. Invalid or Missing Structured Data (Schema Errors)

Structured data errors don't just cost you rich results — Google Search Console will actively flag certain mistakes as issues requiring a fix, and unresolved errors can affect trust signals over time.

  • Multiple Review objects without an AggregateRating. This is one of the most common schema errors Search Console flags — if a page shows multiple individual reviews, Google requires an AggregateRating object summarizing them, or the entire review markup can be considered invalid.
  • Schema that doesn't match visible page content. If your JSON-LD claims a price, rating, or fact that isn't actually shown on the page to users, this violates Google's structured data guidelines and can result in a manual action.
  • Broken JSON syntax. A single unescaped quote or apostrophe inside dynamically generated schema (common in CMS-driven blogs and product pages) can silently invalidate the entire structured data block for that page — often without any visible symptom on the page itself.

Test every template that generates schema — not just one example page — using Google's Rich Results Test, since a single content edge case (an apostrophe in a title, for example) can break the template for every page that uses it.

5. Duplicate Content and Missing Canonicals

  • The same content accessible at multiple URLs (with and without trailing slash, with and without query parameters, an aliased route alongside the "real" one) splits ranking signals between duplicates instead of concentrating them on one page.
  • Every page should have a self-referencing <link rel="canonical"> tag, and any duplicate or alias URL should either 301-redirect to the canonical version or explicitly declare it via canonical tag.

6. Mobile Usability Issues

Google has used mobile-first indexing since 2019 — it primarily crawls and ranks based on the mobile version of your site, not desktop. Common problems specific to Pakistani business sites:

  • Contact forms or WhatsApp buttons that don't render correctly on smaller screens.
  • Text too small to read without zooming.
  • Tap targets (buttons, links) placed too close together for accurate mobile tapping.

7. Security Headers and Basic Hardening

Not a direct ranking factor on their own, but missing security headers (HSTS, X-Content-Type-Options, X-Frame-Options, Content-Security-Policy) increase vulnerability to the kind of site compromise that does devastate rankings — a hacked site injected with spam links or malware can lose all its rankings overnight and take months to fully recover, even after the hack is cleaned up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if technical SEO issues are actually hurting my rankings?

Search Console is the most reliable free signal — check the Core Web Vitals, Page Indexing, and Enhancements reports for flagged errors. A sudden, unexplained ranking or traffic drop with no content changes is also a strong indicator of a technical cause.

How often should a technical SEO audit be done?

A full audit every 3-6 months catches most issues before they compound. Search Console should be checked monthly at minimum — Google actively emails site owners when it detects new structured data or indexing errors, so those alerts shouldn't go unread.

Can technical SEO fixes cause a temporary ranking drop?

Occasionally, yes — a major site migration, URL restructuring, or template change can cause short-term fluctuation while Google re-crawls and re-evaluates the site. This is usually followed by a net improvement within a few weeks if the underlying fixes were correct.

We audit and fix exactly these issues — page speed, schema validity, crawlability, security headers — as the technical foundation of every SEO project we run, and we apply the same standard to our own website. If you want a free technical audit of where your site currently stands, book a consultation.
